Kazakhstan's Futuristic Skylines

Discover a landscape where nomadic heritage meets bold ambition in the stunning modern architecture of Astana (Nur-Sultan), a capital city built for the 21st century.

A Capital of Ambition

Since moving its capital to Astana (Nur-Sultan) in 1997, Kazakhstan has commissioned world-renowned architects to create a skyline that is both daring and deeply symbolic of the nation's future.

Bayterek Tower

Symbolism: The mythical Tree of Life holding a golden egg.

The undisputed icon of the city, Bayterek Tower embodies a Kazakh folktale. Visitors ascend 97 metres into the "golden egg" sphere to enjoy 360-degree views and place their hand in a print of the first president's palm, a gesture said to bring good fortune.

Khan Shatyr

Feature: The world's largest tent structure.

Translated as "Royal Marquee," this incredible structure creates a comfortable microclimate year-round, protecting visitors from Astana's extreme weather. Inside this 150-metre-high marvel is a shopping centre, park, boating river, and even an indoor beach club with tropical sand.

Palace of Peace & Reconciliation

Purpose: A global centre for religious understanding.

This striking 62-metre-high pyramid was built to host the Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions. A symbol of unity and tolerance, its interior features a 1,300-seat opera house and a light-filled apex atrium adorned with stained-glass doves by artist Brian Clarke.

Nur Alem Sphere

Record: The world's largest spherical building.

The 80-metre diameter centrepiece of the EXPO 2017 site, Nur Alem now serves as the Museum of Future Energy. Each of its eight floors is dedicated to a different energy source, from space and solar to wind and biomass, in a series of fascinating interactive exhibits.

Central Concert Hall

Architect: Manfredi Nicoletti

Design: Inspired by the petals of a flower.

The building's dynamic shape resembles the unfolding petals of a flower, protecting the interior from the harsh climate. Renowned for its exceptional acoustics, its main hall can seat 3,500 people and is one of the largest of its kind, hosting classical music and ballet performances.

Astana Opera

Architect: Bjarke Ingels Group & others

Acoustics: Considered among the best in the world.

A magnificent example of neoclassical architecture, the Astana Opera is the premier venue for opera and ballet in Central Asia. Its opulent interior is adorned with marble, gold leaf, and a breathtaking 1.6-ton chandelier, offering a world-class cultural experience.
