The main highlight

The Valley of Castles, also known as Dolina Zamkov, is the main highlight of Charyn Canyon and the area most visitors come to see. Visitors usually start from the upper viewpoint, where there is a parking area, visitor centre, restroom facilities and the Tary restaurant.

Walking Route to Charyn River

From the visitor area, travellers can walk down into the Valley of Castles and follow the main route towards the Charyn River. Many visitors stop near the river to rest or have a picnic. There is some shade on the trail, but sheltered spots are limited in hot weather, so it is best to carry a hat and enough water.

At a steady pace, the walk usually takes 30 to 45 minutes each way. Travellers should allow extra time for photos, short breaks and time by the river.

Visitors can also take a UAZ, a Russian-made 4×4 vehicle, from the visitor centre to the Charyn River and back. A one-way ride usually starts from around 500 KZT, about $1.

• November to March: Temperatures are much cooler and can drop below freezing during winter, especially at night. Light snowfall is also possible. The canyon is still worth visiting, as the snow gives the landscape a unique appearance.

Why Summer Is Not the Best Time to Explore Charyn Canyon

• June to August: Summer is the hottest period at Charyn Canyon, with daytime temperatures sometimes reaching 40°C or more. Walking during the afternoon can be difficult, so it is better to visit early in the morning. For a better experience, travellers can stay overnight and see the canyon at sunset or sunrise.

Journey from Almaty to Charyn Canyon

From Almaty, follow the A-351 highway towards Baiseit. After passing Kurty, look for the turn-off to Charyn Canyon.

The drive takes about 3 hours one way without stops. For easier navigation, set your route to the Charyn visitor centre on Google Maps, 2GIS or Yandex Maps.

How to Reach Charyn Canyon

• A private car is the most flexible option.
• Organised tours are the easiest choice for first-time visitors.
• There are no regular buses directly to Charyn Canyon.
• InDrive may work, but finding a return ride is not guaranteed.

What You Pay at Charyn Canyon

Charyn Canyon has an entry fee because it is located within Charyn State National Nature Park. The fee helps support park maintenance, cleaning and conservation work.

Prices may change from time to time, sometimes more than once a year, but the difference is usually small. It is still better to carry some extra cash in case the fee has been updated.

Charyn Canyon Stay Options and Costs

Travellers who want to spend more time exploring Charyn Canyon can stay overnight instead of returning to Almaty on the same day.

The visitor centre has glamping tents and cabins. The glamping option is more basic, while the cabins offer better comfort with a bathroom, shower and air conditioning.

Overnight prices generally range from 40,000 to 75,000 KZT per night, depending on the accommodation type, season and day of the week. 

Travellers can also camp with their own tent on the park grounds. In this case, they will need to pay a slightly higher eco-fee at the park entrance.
